Maté de coca
Maté de coca
The aroma of coca tea resembles the taste of chinese green tea but less bitter. Cocatea tastes a litlle sweet of its own, but if you prefer you can flavour the tea with sugar or honey. Green tea is mainly used because it contains flavanoids, wich benefits health by eliminating the free radicals in the body. Cocaleaves contain as many flavanoids as green tea, and it has other health benefits too.
The stimulating effect of a cup of coca tea is comparable with one cup of coffee, but it is more friendly to your stomache and unlike coffee you can drink it all day long without getting nausea. It even takes away feelings of nausea. By drinking cocatea all day long you keep vibrant and fresh and will have more concentration for the task at hand, also it does not stain your teeth. A disadvantage of coca tea is that the alkaloids are poorly water soluable. You have to use relatively a lot of leaves in comparison to chewing leaves or to leaves dipped in alcohol. But when you grow your own bush there are enough cocaleaves to drink cocatea all day. You can easily use the leaves for up to four ot five cups of tea before they loose their effectiveness.
How to make cocatea?
Fill one cup with about 10 cocaleaves. Boil a kettle of water and let it cool down to <90 Celsius this is important otherwise the flavor and some of the nurients will be ruined by the hot water; the tea will then taste very 'green' and not at all nice. Cocaleaves consist of many delicate flavours that are not tolerant to temperatures higher than 90 Celsius. Pour the water into the cup and let it soak for aproximatly 5 minutes before drinking it. Due to the low airpressure on Andean heights the water is already boiling at 89 Celsius, that way boiled water, in the high Andes, is never to hot to make coca tea.
